4 Jewelry Wearing Tips for Men

Jewelry says a lot about a man. Men’s fashion has varied over the last century, but it has all accumulated to where we are today. But there are some things that have stayed the same — classic men’s wedding bands still tend to be a go-to, but there are many wild collections available nowadays.

If you’re wearing jewelry, as a man, you likely want to know the ropes. What should you wear? How do you wear your jewelry? And how do you match your jewelry with other accessories and clothing?

Here’s your ultimate guide to men’s jewelry.

  1. Know your metals and properly match them

The biggest thing about men’s jewelry is the issue of properly matching your metals with one another. But you need to know your metals to properly match them. For instance, gold, which is the most common color for wedding bands and cufflinks, is a warmer tone. While it can come in varieties of yellow gold, white gold and pink gold, it will always have a warm tone.

This means you’ll want to match similar warm jewelry with one another, or you’ll want to find clothing that can match it as well. However, contrasting can work, too: a black suit with a gold wedding band, a blue suit with gold earrings and gold accent rings.

Silver and dark, silver-toned metals are closer to what would be called neutral. This means that it can almost be matched with any color of clothing, from dark suits to bright-colored summer shorts and shirts, but you need to be mindful of what type of jewelry you match it with. If you’re going to match it with bronze or gold jewelry, you want to try and do it with metals on the lighter side of the spectrum.

Beyond that, you need to try and keep it simple with diamonds and gems, as they can become too much rather quickly. Lastly, wood and antler jewelry has grown into prominence in recent years. Because these are natural earth tones, they can pretty much be worn with any other accessories and clothing. However, it’s still a good idea to find a ring or piece of jewelry that matches your natural skin tone — or is adjacent to it — to maintain that natural look.

  1. Don’t overdo it

It can be easy to overdo it with jewelry. You’ve probably seen a video on TikTok of some young eBoy wearing a ring on every finger, a choker, bracelets and more. This is a clear sign of wearing too much jewelry.

The best policy, with anything in life, is moderation. Don’t go too far with your choices. If you’re just starting to wear jewelry, max it out at two accessories and see how you feel. If you feel comfortable and it matches your overall style, you can begin increasing from there. Although, you’ll still want to consider what it is you’re wearing with one another. Your jewelry still needs to match, too.

  1. Consider the symbolism

You also need to consider the symbolism of your jewelry and how you wear it. For instance, orthodox Christians wear their wedding rings on their right hand, on their ring finger, rather than their left. Similarly, certain rings may have specific symbols engraved on them, which may have cultural references.

  1. Where will you be?

While it’s becoming more popular to wear your jewelry almost anywhere, there are still some places where you may be judged by wearing jewelry while on-the-go. For instance, some other men might judge you for wearing hoop earrings during an important business meeting. Similarly, you may be judged in certain cities around the world, based on their cultural values, depending on what it is you’re wearing. So be mindful where you go, especially if it could harm your credibility.

Types of Jewelry

Necklaces

You can get away with most necklaces since many of them can simply be worn under the shirt, hidden away from the sight of others. However, if you’re the type who likes wearing them outside of your clothing, you’ll want to consider what color necklace you want. You want something that will generally fit into your style while also matching your other jewelry.

Men’s Wedding Bands

Wedding rings are an interesting type of jewelry, as it’s something you’ll be wearing all the time. So how do you figure out what wedding ring you want to wear? You need to consider your personal style — particularly, what your daily dresswear looks like. If you’re a businessman, a calm gold wedding ring may be the way to go. But if you’re more of an eccentric type, you could go for something a little more wild like a cerakote wedding band

Earrings

Earrings used to be unconventional for men, but men’s earrings have become far more popular in recent years. While they’re still not welcome in some industries, particularly finance and business, earrings on men are more or less accepted anywhere else.

Bracelets

Bracelets are another accessory that can be worn with almost any type of clothing and jewelry. But you need to think of how you’ll pair it with your other clothing. For instance, metallic bracelets won’t pair well with sweatpants and a sweatshirt or during a business meeting, especially if it’s on the larger side.

Tie Bars

Tie bars are especially great for anyone who works in marketing, business or sales. Not only does it keep your tie in place, but it also adds a minor amount of flair that works well with the rest of your suit and dress. Just be sure to match it with any other jewelry you’re wearing. Most of all, make sure it matches your tie!
